Los Túneles Snorkeling Excursion | Isabela Island, Galapagos
The experience Los Túneles Snorkeling Excursion
Journey to Los Túneles, a snorkeler’s paradise near an impressive labyrinth of lava tubes with two active volcanos further in the backdrop. The area hosts all sorts of wildlife amidst its otherworldly lava tunnels and under its crystal clear waters. Look up to see Nazca boobies, frigate birds and blue-footed boobies perched on rock outcroppings. Below you, graceful giant rays glide past thousands of yellow tailed grunts. Beside you, giant sea turtles swimming nonchalantly through the calm waters.
A small craft will take you on an exhilarating hour long ride to the southern tip of Isabela Island, past outer-coastal Pacific waters to the mystically calm sanctuary that is Los Túneles. First, wander the island, exploring a maze of cactus laden black lava arches, and traversing lava bridges. Meet the affable blue-footed boobie and if you’re lucky, you may see their mating dance. Then, snorkel the crystal clear lagoon looking for sleepy white-tipped reef sharks, schools of colorful fish and maybe even a sea horse, hiding in the tangle of mangroves. Later in the afternoon, return to Puerto Villamil in time for a sunset stroll on the beach.
