Andean Highlands & Otavalo

Andean Highlands & Otavalo

Day trips from Quito are also available

Day 1

From Quito, travel north through the Andean highlands to Imbabura, known as the Province of the Lakes. The journey takes you through green, Andean valleys and over picturesque plateaus, where you may catch a glimpse of Mt. Cayambe or Mt. Cotopaxi, among the highest snowcapped volcanoes in Ecuador. This culturally rich area is home to the Otavaleños, Kichwa-speaking Indians famous for their traditional garments, ancient handicrafts, and expansive outdoor markets. A short hike takes you to the sacred Peguche Waterfall, one of the most important ritual places for the indigenous people in northern Ecuador. Stay at Hacienda Cusin, a historic 17th-century estate converted into a charming, boutique guesthouse.

Day 2

This morning transfer to the active crater lake, Laguna Cuicocha or “Lake of the Guinea Pigs,” nestled at 10,072 feet above sea level. This pristine lake fills the ancient, but active, crater of Cotacachi Volcano, and features two islets at its center. According to ancient belief, Cotacachi was the mother of the Imbayas, a Pre-Inca tribe. Proceed on a short hike around part of the crater wall of this ancient volcano and take in spectacular views of the emerald-green lake below. After lunch in Cotacachi, a small village renowned for its leather crafts, opt for some shopping or stroll around the plaza before returing to Hacienda Cusin.

Day 3

Today visit the market in Otavalo, one of the largest outdoor markets in South America. The market dates back to pre-Inca times when people from the Amazon would travel to Otavalo by foot to trade for local goods. On Saturdays, villagers walk for days from surrounding villages to sell or trade their animals at the livestock market so they may acquire other products to take back to their villages. Make your way to the fruit and vegetable market and handicrafts market. Stroll around, chat with artisans, and have a shot at bargaining for local handicrafts. Later this afternoon return to Quito.
